This course consists of eight meetings, covering the years 1783 to 1865. It will feature highlights from the History survey course that all CCU history majors are required to take. We will examine:
- Crises that led to the drafting of the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights
- Challenges facing the Washington, Adams, Jefferson, and Madison administrations
- Westward expansion and the emergence of a market economy
- The tumultuous presidency of Andrew Jackson
- The Second Great Awakening, Anti-Slavery, and other reform movements
- Texas independence and the Mexican-American War
- The disastrous 1850s and the movement toward secession
- The Civil War
No books are required for this course. Optional readings will be posted on this Moodle page and/or emailed to the class list as attachments. You will have ample opportunity to ask questions at each week's presentation.
